The castle was the property of the Habsburg family, a powerful lineage that marked the birth of the Swiss Confederation with its seal. The Habsburg family was likely established in the tenth century in Aargau. It is around the year 1020 that Radbot and his brother Werner, bishop of Strasbourg, built the fortress of Habsburg, first seat of the future imperial family.
